OneWeb

OneWeb (UK, founded 2012) is building a broadband satellite constellation to provide global internet coverage, especially to remote areas. The company has launched hundreds of small satellites into low Earth orbit, aiming for an initial constellation size of ~648 satellites. OneWeb’s system will offer high-speed, low-latency connectivity as an alternative/complement to terrestrial fiber and cellular networks, and it is often seen as a competitor or counterpart to SpaceX’s Starlink system. After a financial restructuring in 2020 (including investment from the UK government and Bharti Global), OneWeb resumed launches and reached near-global coverage by 2022. The service is expected to go live for many regions, targeting enterprise, government, and maritime/aviation customers. OneWeb’s ambitious project underscores the renewed interest in space-based internet, leveraging advances in small satellite technology and mass manufacturing.
