Leonardo (Space Division)

Leonardo S.p.A.'s space-focused business covers a broad range of space activities and technologies. It encompasses the design and manufacture of satellites and orbiting infrastructure, the production of advanced space equipment and sensors, the provision of satellite-based services, and participation in launch and propulsion systems. Leonardo leverages over 60 years of experience in the space sector, and many of its capabilities are realized through the Space Alliance a strategic partnership with Thales established in 2005. Through this alliance, Leonardo holds major stakes in Thales Alenia Space (33%) and Telespazio (67%), combining expertise in satellite development and space services respectively. Leonardo’s space initiatives have contributed to prominent programs, including supplying over half of the International Space Station’s pressurized volume via Thales Alenia Space and providing atomic clocks for Europe’s Galileo navigation satellites. The company also participates in launch vehicle development through its minority stake in Italy’s Avio, further extending its role across the space domain.
