Skyloom

Skyloom (USA/Argentina, founded 2017) is building a space-based optical communications network to transfer data at high rates between satellites and ground stations via laser links. The company is developing laser communication terminals that can be installed on satellites to enable fast, secure data relay as an alternative to traditional radio-frequency downlinks. Skyloom aims to deploy data-relay satellites in geostationary orbit that can collect data from low Earth orbit satellites by laser, then beam it down to optical ground stations, greatly increasing bandwidth and reducing latency for Earth observation and other data-intensive space applications. In 2022, Skyloom announced partnerships to demonstrate its technology in orbit. By creating an “optic fiber-like” network in space, Skyloom seeks to meet the growing demand for real-time connectivity with satellites, especially as sensor resolutions and data volumes rise.
