Space Forge (UK, founded 2018) is focused on in-space manufacturing and returning products to Earth. The company is developing a reusable small satellite platform (the ForgeStar) that can perform materials manufacturing in microgravity and then safely re-enter to deliver the products. Microgravity can enable the creation of high-quality crystals, alloys, pharmaceuticals and semiconductors that are difficult to produce on Earth. Space Forge’s approach involves fully autonomous spacecraft that operate in orbit as factories, then come back and get refurbished for another flight. In 2022, the company planned its first test mission to demonstrate the concept. By building cheap, reusable orbital factories, Space Forge aims to commercialize the unique advantages of off-Earth manufacturing.
